(The Effect of Influencer Marketing, n.d.)

The quote above by influencer Gary Vaynerchuk is where our journey though the evolution of advertising comes to an end. While social media might not be exactly like crack, the marketing behavior of social media companies has often been compared to the deceptive advertising campaigns that the tobacco industry employed for decades (Rodriguez, 2021). You can read about the most recent United States Senate investigation into Facebook's unethical marketing towards children and adolescents here: Senators say Facebook used Big Tobacco playbook to exploit kids (cnbc.com).

As is probably evident by now, a quotation was used for each page of this website as an introduction to the topic of the page. The quotations were meant to be not only entertaining, but culturally diverse, as well. This was meant to be a subtle nod to my personal mission statement, as were the eight culturally diverse commercials posted to the prior page. The quote on this page was specifically chosen because it comes from an influencer. Influencers are the latest tool in the marketer's toolbox and social media is the most important tool in the influencer's toolbox. By using social media, influencers can rapidly build brand recognition and brand loyalty for a business (Kurtzer-Meyers, 2022). This article from Medium explains influencer marketing and its benefits: How to Use Influencer Marketing to Grow Your Brand | by Gayle Kurtzer-Meyers | The Startup | Medium. The graphic to the left illustrates the viability of influencer marketing.

The two TED Talks below offer opposing views on the effects social media is having on society. While social media certainly benefits marketers, does the cost we pay for a loss of privacy justify the better world social media creates? Decide for yourself.
